Why Does My Vape Taste Burnt?

Why Does My Vape Taste Burnt?

A burnt vape taste is one of the most common problems for vape users. The good news is that it usually has a simple reason.

Why Does My Vape Taste Burnt?

A burnt taste usually happens when the coil or cotton inside your pod is too dry, too old, or being used with the wrong settings.

Inside most vape pods and coils, there is cotton that absorbs e-liquid. When you vape, the coil heats up and turns the liquid into vapour. If the cotton is dry or overheated, it can create a burnt taste.

Simple answer: Burnt taste usually means the coil or pod is dry, old, overused, or not getting enough e-liquid.

1. The Coil or Pod Is Dry

If there is not enough liquid inside the cotton, the coil heats dry cotton instead of e-liquid. This creates a harsh burnt taste.

This can happen when:

  • The pod is almost empty
  • You just filled a new pod and used it too quickly
  • The device is tilted and liquid is not reaching the coil
  • You are taking long puffs too often

Fix: Keep enough e-liquid in the pod and wait a few minutes after filling a new pod before using it.

2. You Did Not Prime the Coil

A new coil or pod needs time to absorb e-liquid before you start vaping.

If you vape immediately after filling, the cotton may still be dry. This can burn the coil from the first puff.

  • Fill the pod or tank
  • Wait 5–10 minutes
  • Start with shorter puffs
  • Do not chain vape immediately

Tip: Priming is one of the easiest ways to avoid burnt taste.

3. The Coil or Pod Is Old

Coils and pods do not last forever. Over time, the cotton gets dark, the flavour becomes weaker, and the vape may start tasting burnt.

You may need to replace your coil or pod if:

  • The flavour tastes burnt or harsh
  • The flavour is weaker than before
  • The pod leaks more than usual
  • The vapour feels dry or uncomfortable
  • The coil has been used for many refills

Fix: Replace the pod or coil when the flavour drops or the burnt taste does not go away.

4. You Are Chain Vaping

Chain vaping means taking many puffs quickly with little time between them.

The cotton inside the coil needs time to absorb more liquid after each puff. If you vape too fast, the cotton may become dry and taste burnt.

  • Take short breaks between puffs
  • Avoid long repeated pulls
  • Let the pod re-soak between uses

Fix: Give your device a few seconds between puffs.

5. Your Wattage Is Too High

Some vape devices allow you to adjust power. If the wattage is too high for the coil, the e-liquid may burn too fast.

This can cause a hot, harsh, or burnt taste.

  • Check the recommended wattage range on the coil
  • Start low and increase slowly
  • Do not exceed the coil’s recommended range

Fix: Lower the wattage and use the coil within its recommended range.

6. The E-Liquid Is Too Thick for the Device

Some liquids are thicker than others. High-VG liquids may not work well in small pod systems because they do not absorb into the coil as quickly.

If the liquid is too thick, the cotton may dry out faster and create a burnt taste.

  • Pod systems usually work better with thinner liquids
  • High-VG liquids are usually better for larger DL or sub-ohm devices
  • Nicotine salts are often used in MTL pod systems

Fix: Match the e-liquid type to your device.

Can You Fix a Burnt Coil?

Sometimes, if the burnt taste is mild, you can improve it by refilling the pod, waiting a few minutes, and taking slower puffs.

But if the cotton inside the coil is already burnt, the taste usually will not fully go away.

Important: If the burnt taste stays after refilling and waiting, it is usually time to replace the pod or coil.

How to Prevent Burnt Taste

  • Do not let your pod run completely empty
  • Wait 5–10 minutes after filling a new pod
  • Use the right liquid for your device
  • Do not chain vape too quickly
  • Use the correct wattage
  • Replace old pods and coils on time

Our Recommendation

If your vape tastes burnt, first check the liquid level and wait a few minutes. If the taste continues, replace the pod or coil.

If it keeps happening often, you may be using the wrong e-liquid, the wrong wattage, or a device that does not match your vaping style.

Keep your pod filled, prime new coils, and replace pods before the flavour becomes harsh.
